After working in women’s health for eight and a half years, Karen Tom finds the fertility specialty to be a fascinating area of medicine that is constantly growing in terms of science and education. Karen’s past experience includes several years as an IVF nurse coordinator at the Center for Women’s Reproductive Care at Columbia University. Karen is a registered nurse and holds a BSN from the University of Pennsylvania.
Karen enjoys working for WIN. “My coworkers are all very friendly and they care very much about doing the best job possible, which drives me to do the best I can,” she says. “I think we are best at assisting patients with navigating the intricacies of the healthcare system. We take the time to offer them thorough patient education and counseling.” Karen says she has learned from patients that the difficult journey through treatment is much smoother when the patient is well informed.
She encourages patients to find good support, to not give up hope and to realize that many other people are going through fertility treatment, so you are not alone. “A patient at my previous clinic got pregnant with only one egg retrieved and very few sperm extracted,” she said. “It goes to show that no matter how discouraging the situation looks, there is always a possibility.”
Karen lives in Queens, NY and enjoys going out for dinner, shows, and movies with family and friends. She is also an avid traveler. “There are still so many places in the world I would like to explore!” she says.
